SPEECH BY MRS. ALDONA BUDREWICZ-JACOBSON

Madam Mayor,
Gentlemen of the Administrative Council,
Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends,

After a long gestation period, one fine day in 1997, I launched the foundation of the Frédéric Chopin Geneva Society. Thus the dream became reality!

The first person who reached out to me was Mr. Jean-Pierre Badan, the Mayor of the Commune at the time. It was therefore natural for the Chopin Society to choose its headquarters in the Commune of Collonge-Bellerive, my home commune. Mr. Badan, sensitive to the music and cultural development of the Commune, not only accepted the project but he encouraged me by granting the Chopin Society a precious financial support from the Commune. During the twenty years that followed, the Municipality supported us faithfully and I always found an attentive ear with successive Mayors, and particularly with Mrs Francine de Planta.

During these twenty years, several people have worked within the Committee to make our association work. It is thanks to their voluntary work that we have been able to successfully carry out our activities: our festivals, our spring concerts, our master classes, our Chopin Prizes awarded at the Warsaw International Competitions, and our assistance to young pianists.

All these concerts have allowed music lovers to immerse themselves in Chopin's music, which in my opinion represents the pinnacle of piano music.

Today, we are proud to see how necessary the idea of creating the Chopin Society proved to be and to highlight the role it plays in Geneva's musical and cultural milieu.

The awarding of the "Mérite Collongeois 2017" to our Society coincides with our twentieth anniversary, which gives us great pleasure. On behalf of the Committee of the Fréderic Chopin Society, I warmly thank the Commune of Collonge-Bellerive and its Authorities for this generous gesture.
